About Course

Nagoya University—at the heart of a nation with the highest proportion of elderly citizens—presents a high-impact technical module: “Automobiles in Aging Society.” As a specialized component of the Nagoya University Summer Intensive Program (NUSIP), this course addresses a critical global challenge: how to maintain mobility and independence for an aging population while ensuring road safety. You will investigate the intersection of human factors, neuroscience, and automotive design to create vehicles that adapt to the user, rather than the other way around. While the university provides elite academic instruction, access to Big Data driving behavior research, and official academic credits, Edulux Summer manages the high-end logistics and travel services required for your stay in Japan.

What You’ll Learn (at Nagoya University)

  • Demographics & Mobility Trends: Investigating the socio-economic impact of an aging society and the essential role of the automobile in maintaining the quality of life for seniors in rural and urban Japan.

  • Elderly Driver Assessment: Mastering the techniques used to evaluate the physical and cognitive changes in aging drivers, from reaction time delays to shifts in peripheral vision.

  • Neuroscience of Driving: Exploring groundbreaking research—pioneered at Nagoya University—into why elderly drivers are more prone to “pedal misapplication” (mistaking the gas for the brake) under high cognitive load.

  • Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS): Analyzing the engineering of safety features specifically designed for seniors, such as Collision Mitigation Braking and Emergency Steering Assist.

  • Human Factors & Ergonomics: Learning to design “Age-Friendly” vehicle interfaces (HMI) that reduce mental workload and account for diminished physical flexibility and strength.

  • Inclusive Mobility Solutions: Examining the role of Autonomous Shuttles and AI-driven personal mobility devices in providing a “safety net” for those who can no longer operate a traditional vehicle.
