The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) offers a premier research-intensive track: “EDA for Superconducting Quantum Computing.” As part of the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) and supervised by Prof. Qiming Shao, this project tackles one of the greatest bottlenecks in quantum hardware: the lack of automated design tools. Just as classical chips require Electronic Design Automation (EDA) to handle billions of transistors, superconducting qubits require specialized software to manage layout, simulation, and noise. While HKUST provides the elite research environment, the IAS Center for Quantum Technologies, and official UROP credits, Edulux Summer manages the high-end logistics and travel services required for your stay in Asia’s world city.
What You’ll Learn (at HKUST)
-
Superconducting Circuit Basics: Investigating the physics of transmons, resonators, and Josephson junctions—the fundamental building blocks of solid-state quantum computers.
-
Mastering IBM Qiskit Metal: Gaining hands-on proficiency with the industry-leading open-source platform for quantum EDA, moving from component libraries to full-chip layouts.
-
Quantum Gate Simulation: Designing and verifying single-qubit and two-qubit gate operations through advanced electromagnetic (EM) and Hamiltonian simulations.
-
Hybrid Quantum Systems: Exploring the cutting-edge integration of photon-magnon and phonon-magnon systems, researching how light, sound, and spin waves can work together to store and process quantum information.
-
Design Automation & Optimization: Developing scripts and tools to reduce the design cycle time and improve the yield of quantum integrated circuits.
-
Research Publication & Methodology: Working within a high-performance lab setting to produce scholarly results, with the potential to contribute to peer-reviewed research papers.
