Elementary, Intermediate, Advanced Japanese : Kyoto University
About Course
Kyoto University, through its Institute for Liberal Arts and Sciences (ILAS), offers a comprehensive Japanese language curriculum designed for international students, including exchange participants (KUINEP/GEA) and regular degree-seekers. The program is specifically structured to bridge the gap between daily communication and the high-level academic Japanese required for university research. Courses are held at the Yoshida Campus, where the blend of historic architecture and modern innovation provides an unparalleled backdrop for language acquisition. While the university provides elite instruction and 2 credits per course, Edulux Summer manages the premium logistics and cultural immersion services for those attending during the Kyoto Summer Program 2026.
What You’ll Learn (at Kyoto University)
The curriculum is divided into three primary tiers, determined by a mandatory online placement test taken before enrollment:
-
Elementary Japanese (I & II):
-
Focus: Building a solid foundation in Hiragana, Katakana, and basic Kanji.
-
Outcome: Mastering essential grammar and vocabulary for daily life, equivalent to JLPT N5–N4. Students learn to introduce themselves, navigate the city, and engage in simple social interactions.
-
-
Intermediate Japanese (I & II):
-
Focus: Expanding vocabulary and mastering complex sentence structures and polite language (Keigo).
-
Outcome: Developing the ability to read essays and listen to longer dialogues on familiar topics, equivalent to JLPT N3–N2. This level emphasizes “Integrated Courses” that link reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
-
-
Advanced Japanese:
-
Focus: Refining academic and professional Japanese, focusing on abstract topics, literature, and news media.
-
Outcome: Achieving the fluency required to attend specialized university lectures and participate in high-level research discussions, equivalent to JLPT N1.
-
-
Kanji & Integrated Skills: Specialized elective classes are available to supplement core learning, focusing specifically on character acquisition or “Seminar for Multicultural Studies” to apply language skills in social contexts.
