About Course

The University of Groningen, through the Wubbo Ockels School for Energy and Climate, offers the intensive summer school: “Energy Challenge – An Interdisciplinary Approach.” Scheduled for August 24 – 28, 2026, this program addresses the “Hydrogen Economy” not merely as a chemical or engineering hurdle, but as a profound socio-technical challenge. Located in the Northern Netherlands—a region leading the transition from natural gas to sustainable alternatives—the course provides a unique vantage point on how to scale hydrogen infrastructure. While the university provides elite academic instruction, site visits to energy network operators, and 2 ECTS credits, Edulux Summer manages the high-end logistics and travel services required for your stay in Groningen.

What You’ll Learn (at University of Groningen)

  • Socio-Technical Transition Theory: Investigating why the pace of the energy transition is often delayed by social, political, and economic inertia rather than technical limitations.

  • Interdisciplinary Perspectives:

    • Energy Law: Exploring the regulatory frameworks and “Right to Connect” issues for new hydrogen networks.

    • Environmental Psychology: Understanding public acceptance, “Not In My Backyard” (NIMBY) sentiments, and consumer behavior regarding green gas.

    • Energy Economics: Analyzing the cost-competitiveness of Green vs. Blue hydrogen and the market mechanisms needed for upscaling.

    • Spatial Science: Planning the physical infrastructure and land-use requirements for large-scale electrolysis and storage facilities.

  • The “Gas to Hydrogen” Shift: Learning from regional stakeholders (like Gasunie or EnviTec) about the practicalities of repurposing existing natural gas pipelines for hydrogen transport.

  • Challenge-Based Group Work: Collaborating in small, diverse teams to define and solve a real-time energy challenge, culminating in a peer presentation on the final day.

  • Knowledge Brokerage: Developing the skills to communicate complex technical energy solutions to policymakers and the general public.
