The University of Groningen presents the intensive summer school: “Multiscale Modeling and its Applications,” hosted by the Faculty of Science and Engineering. This program is specifically tailored for advanced Master’s and early PhD students in mathematics, physics, and engineering. The core challenge of modern science is that systems—from biological tissues to high-performance automotive materials—operate across vastly different scales. This course provides the “numerical bridge” required to simulate these systems without the prohibitive cost of full microscopic modeling. While the university provides elite academic instruction, access to the Berendsen Center for Multiscale Modeling, and Certificate of Attendance (approx. 1 ECTS), Edulux Summer manages the high-end logistics and travel services required for your stay in the historic “City of Talent.”
What You’ll Learn (at University of Groningen)
-
Foundations of Multiscale Modeling: Investigating the methodology for identifying relevant scales and integrating disparate models into a single, comprehensive description of a system.
-
Multi-Agent Systems (MAS): Mastering the modeling of systems where individual “agents” (cells, particles, or vehicles) interact to create complex, emergent global behaviors.
-
Numerical Multi-scale Methods: Exploring advanced computational frameworks like the Heterogeneous Multi-scale Method (HMM) to couple micro-scale simulations with macro-scale solvers.
-
Asymptotic Analysis & Homogenization: Learning the mathematical techniques used to derive simplified continuum equations from complex, fine-scale underlying structures.
-
Fluid & Solid Mechanics Applications: Analyzing real-world problems such as coastal water-wave modeling, lubrication in mechanical systems, and the structural integrity of advanced materials.
-
Generalized Modeling & Adaptive Networks: Exploring systems where the network structure itself evolves in response to the state of the nodes, creating sophisticated self-organizing feedback loops.
