About Course

The University of Geneva (UNIGE) offers an extraordinary summer intensive, “Submerged Prehistoric Landscapes,” building on the pioneering success of the university’s Terra Submersa expedition. This course introduces students to the cutting-edge field of Continental Shelf Prehistoric Research (CSPR), which investigates the vast landscapes that were drowned by rising sea levels after the last Ice Age. While the university provides the elite academic instruction and technical training, Edulux Summer manages the high-end logistics and travel services required for your international field study.

What You’ll Learn (at University of Geneva)

  • Marine Geophysics: Hands-on training in state-of-the-art methodologies, including multibeam echosounders, side-scan sonar, and sub-bottom profiling to map the seafloor.

  • Paleoclimate & Sea-Level Change: Understanding the dynamic relationship between melting ice sheets, tectonic movements, and the drowning of prehistoric coastlines.

  • Human Migration Patterns: Analyzing how environmental shifts dictated the movement of Paleolithic, Mesolithic, and Neolithic populations across now-submerged plains.

  • Archaeological Interpretation: Learning to identify potential human settlement sites and submerged artifacts within complex geophysical data sets.

  • Coastal Prehistory: Exploring the unique archaeological record of the Franchthi Cave and its surrounding submerged landscapes to reconstruct past human-environment interactions.

  • Data Post-Processing: Gaining practical experience in the software and analytical techniques used to transform raw marine data into 3D models of ancient worlds.
