About Course

The University of Oslo (UiO), Norway’s oldest and highest-ranked institution, offers the premier summer intensive “The Vikings and Medieval Norway (ISSHF1530).” This course provides a scholarly deep dive into the most transformative period of Northern European history, spanning from the first Viking raids in 750 AD to the end of the Middle Ages in 1536. Set in Oslo—home to the world’s best-preserved Viking ships—the program moves beyond popular myths to examine the authentic social, political, and religious evolution of the Norse people. While the university provides the elite academic instruction, access to primary archaeological sources, and 10 ECTS credits, Edulux Summer manages the high-end logistics and travel services required for your stay. We bridge the gap between your home and the Blindern campus, ensuring a seamless transition into the heart of Scandinavia.

What You’ll Learn (at University of Oslo)

  • The Viking Expansion: Analyzing the motivations, technology, and impact of Norse expeditions across Europe, the North Atlantic, and into the Americas.

  • Norse Mythology & Worldview: Investigating the pre-Christian belief systems, the pantheon of gods (Odin, Thor, Freyja), and the role of the sagas in preserving cultural memory.

  • State Formation & Unification: Tracing the political journey from fragmented chiefdoms to a unified Norwegian kingdom under the first monarchs.

  • The Christianization of the North: Exploring the complex and often resistant transition from Old Norse religion to Christianity and its impact on social law and architecture.

  • Medieval Society & Law: Decoding the “Thing” system (early assemblies), the role of women in Viking society, and the development of the Landslov (National Law).

  • Archaeological Field Study: Utilizing Oslo’s world-class museums to analyze physical evidence, from longships and weaponry to runic inscriptions and stave churches.
