About Course

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) offers a high-level research opportunity through its Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP). Titled “Transformers for Medical Imaging and Analysis,” and supervised by Prof. Hao Chen, this project moves beyond standard coursework into the realm of active scientific discovery. While Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have long dominated the field, Vision Transformers (ViTs) are now redefining the state-of-the-art by capturing long-range dependencies in medical data that traditional models might miss. What You’ll Research (at HKUST)

  • Self-Attention in Medical Context: Investigating how the “Attention” mechanism allows models to focus on specific, non-local regions of an X-ray or MRI that may be clinically relevant.

  • Vision Transformer (ViT) Architectures: Mastering the adaptation of Transformer models—originally designed for natural language—to process 2D and 3D medical image patches.

  • Multimodal Data Fusion: Exploring how Transformers can integrate image data with electronic health records (EHR) and genomic data for a holistic patient diagnosis.

  • Hybrid Model Development: Learning to build “Trans-CNN” architectures that combine the local feature extraction of convolutions with the global reasoning of Transformers.

  • Efficiency & Model Scaling: Analyzing techniques to make memory-intensive Transformer models run efficiently on clinical hardware without sacrificing diagnostic precision.

  • Medical Image Segmentation & Detection: Applying these models to real-world tasks such as identifying tumor boundaries or classifying rare pathologies in high-resolution pathology slides.
